Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard
Tour - FAQ
Note: We will send you detailed information about the tour in a
Pre-Departure Packet once you register.
What is the weather going to be like?
In June, the average high temperature on Martha's Vineyard is 73 degrees Fahrenheit (69
degrees on Nantucket) while the average low is 57 (55 Nantucket). In September, the average high on
the islands is 70-71 and the average low is 56. In general, the days are warm and dry and the
nights can be cool; bring an extra sweater or coat.
Which time of the year is best to go there?
The best times of the year to visit the islands are before and after the busy tourist season.
July and August should be avoided. The weather in June is generally excellent. In September, not
only is the skating weather usually perfect but the ocean temperatures are still often warm enough
to entice you to take a dip after a day's skate.
What is the best way to get to the tour and where do we meet?
We will provide detailed information about getting to the Tour in our Pre-Departure Packet
that you will receive upon booking. We meet on Martha's Vineyard and finish on
Nantucket. The
easiest way to get there is to fly to MV and fly home from Nantucket
through gateway
cities such as Boston or Providence. This is a bit more expensive but, in our opinion, definitely
worth it. The only other way to get to the islands is by ferry. There are two ferry services and a
handful of possible routes. Plus, you can get to the ferry docks by private car or public bus. This
leaves you a number of connect-the-dot alternatives on getting to and from the tour, all of which
we will explain in our Pre-Departure Packet.
What should I do if I want to extend my vacation in the area?
Many of our skaters spend an extra day on Martha's Vineyard before the tour or, more often, an extra
day on Nantucket after the tour. It is a great and relaxing way to finish your vacation.
Another option for those flying to the area is to spend a bit of time in the gateway city of
Boston. If you are driving, Cape Cod offers many small towns and resort hotels although, in our
opinion, once you have seen the islands there is no reason to spend time on Cape Cod.
What ability level do I really need to be for this tour?
The Tour is rated for
Advanced Beginners
and up. The skating is almost entirely on paved traffic-free paths and the area is mostly flat.
There are a few short but steep hills on Martha's Vineyard but we warn you about these so you can
stop and walk if you like.
For what type of people would you recommend this tour?
This is one of our most luxurious tour locations. We don't ever lose sight of our roots as a
casual and fun company but, on average, the standard of the hotels and restaurants is higher on
this tour than on most of our others. We stay in a quaint historical bed and breakfast on Nantucket
and a charming centrally-located hotel on Martha's Vineyard. The cuisine ranges from clam bake to
Cajun. If you like your comforts but still want to get some exercise, this is the tour for you.
