Burgundy
June 15 - 20 Skating Multisport
Six Days and Five Nights for $1700
Burgundy! The name brings to mind rolling hills, fantastic food, and
- most of all - fantastic wine.
On this Skating Multisport Tour we spend two days each biking, hiking, and skating. We also
stay in excellent small hotels, drink fantastic local wine, and eat what is likely the best food to
be found on any Zephyr tour.
We meet in the town of Chalon-sur-Saone in the heart of Burgundy. We start with a skate on a
beautiful paved path, flat as a pancake and running 20 kilometers along a canal. We dine that
evening in the "gastronomic" restaurant of our hotel and have time to wander through the heart of
old-town Chalon. On Day Two we pick up our bicycles (included in the tour price) and head off to
the fields and side roads of this lovely part of the world. We visit a medieval town, small
villages, and ancient churches on our way to our second hotel, the Hotel Fontaine de Baranges (see
top photo) in the small village of Buxy.
The Hotel Fontaine de Baranges will be our home for the next three nights, allowing us to
truly unpack and be spoiled by the hospitality and enthusiasm of our host, Catherine and the charm
of tiny Buxy. On Day Three we hike through rolling fields and on country paths, often with a view
overlooking the main valley of Burgundy. On Day Four we are back on the bikes, cruising through the
heart of the wine country, home to some of the finest wines in the world. There is ample time to
test both the wines and the local cuisine after our activities and during our dinners.
On Day Five we take out our skates again, skating on a 42-kilometer path through vineyards,
pastures, and small towns to Cluny, a town famous for its gigantic abbey founded in the 10th
century. Our hotel, the Bourgogne, is built right into the abbey walls and serves as an ideal
location for our farewell dinner. On Day Six we have time for a final hike in the local hills and a
final view of this wonderful land.
