Florida has some of the best long-distance skating trails in the
United States. We skate on three of the best of the best. We meet in Tampa and skate the brand-new
Sun Coast Trail, which runs near but separated from a new toll highway, an excellent example of how
transportation funding in America is changing to include alternatives to the car. We then head to
the 46-mile Withlacoochee Trail that bisects the Withlacoochee Forest and runs along the
Withlacoochee River. (Got that name yet? It’s a tongue twister.) The third trail we use is the
Pinellas Trail, one of the most popular in the country. For good reason – it is 15-feet wide and
runs up and down the Gulf of Mexico, with a view of ancient oak glades and quiet coastal waterways.
We stay two nights in the lovely Plantation Inn in the Gulf Coast town of Citrus Springs,
famous for its Manatee population. We then transfer to the Scottish town of Dunedin at our hotel
right on the water. Three of the top 10 beaches in the country are right in the neighborhood and
the sunsets are awesome.
This is an outstanding tour in which to begin or end the skate season, especially for those of
us who live in winter climates most of the year. The skating is excellent, the hotels relaxing, and
the temperature is in the seventies most days - odds are it will be a sunny day perfect for skating!
